HiCalLife ended the year celebrating the African inspired American holiday of Kwanzaa. It was certainly another successful event, jam packed with education and entertainment in the usual HiCalLife manner, which capped off a back to back to back banger following the previous events The Launch Party, The Living Room. In case you missed it, here’s a recap of the evening.
DJ Sienna Chanel kicked things off as the host for the evening with Janye on the tables playing everything from old school hip hip and and R&B to the progressive beat sounds of today. In the spirit of the holiday, local business owners from the city came out to speak on their behalf, which was a perfect transition to the ceremonious lighting of the candle lead by elder, cultural educator, musician, and poet Queen Mother.
Samiraa Gibson along with Mike Mohamed joined by his bandmates lit up the second half of the celebration. Attendees were treated to an array of vendors, drinks, edibles, and live music. All and all it made for a great way to finish off 2016. We’ll be back again in 2017 but in meantime check out some of the evening’s highlights.
